Can I have a theme song for this year? If so, I’ll take “Thrive” by Casting Crowns. I first really listening to it a few days ago, I felt like I was being reminded of so many lessons God’s been teaching me.
If you don’t know the song, you can watch the official lyric video:
Or just read the lyrics (from the Casting Crowns site):
Here in this worn and weary land
Where many a dream has died
Like a tree planted by the water
We never will run dry
So living water flowing through
God, we thirst for more of You
Fill our hearts and flood our souls with one desire
Just to know You and to make You known
We lift Your name on high
Shine like the sun, make darkness run and hide
We know we were made for so much more than ordinary lives
Its time for us to more than just survive
We were made to thrive
Into Your word, were digging deep
To know our Fathers heart
Into the world, were reaching out
To show them who You are
Joy unspeakable, faith unsinkable
Love unstoppable, anything is possible
What things has God been teaching me that are in this song?
Well, maybe you haven’t read it, but I really learned a ton from the book Say Goodbye to Survival Mode and shared about those lessons in a post called From Survival Mode to Intentional Living. Survival mode isn’t a place I want to be again. I really don’t want to just survive because God has made me to thrive. Just the other day, I was letting myself slip into that “survival mode” mindset, and God used this song to remind me of what He has already taught me.
I also continually want to spend more time in God’s Word. I want to be digging deep. As a family, we’ve been memorizing Psalm 1. I want to be that tree planted by the river bearing its fruit in its season. Again, God used this song to remind me of lessons He continually teaches me. In a book by David Jeremiah I’ve been reading, he talks about how we should be delighting in God’s Word. I love when I read something in God’s Word, in a book by a Christian author, and hear that same lesson in a song. I’m a slow learner, but God keeps reminding me!
“Just to know You and to make You known” is what I want all of our family to be doing. As a main part of our homeschool, we use Classical Conversations. They say that “the purpose of education is to know God and to make Him known.” I have been thinking about this as I look at my homeschooling plans and what our goals are. I love that this song incorporates that into the chorus. Am I running this race God has set before me with my focus on the right things? Am I keeping my destination in mind? Is my family making God known to the world around us? I want to make sure that we don’t get caught up in learning for the sake of learning, but that we want to know God and make Him known in all that we study.
Is God going to teach me more through this song? Probably. I love that He loves me enough to keep on teaching me.
Do you have a song that you could describe as your theme song? If so, I’d love to hear about it!
