The backpack bin is one of my newest organizational ideas and a big help for our family.
In case you don’t know this about me, I would definitely describe myself as organizationally-challenged. One of my organizational goals for this year is to stop having long-term storage in our living spaces. While we do use our backpacks each week for Classical Conversations, we don’t use them any other time. Rather than take up 4 shelves in the school room to hold 4 backpacks, I decided to store them in a big plastic tub on basement shelves.
Now we carry the bin up from the basement the night before CC (or even the morning of), throw snacks in the backpacks, and load the bin into the van.
When we get to CC, my son carries the backpack bin into the church, puts it in the coat rack area, and everyone grabs their backpacks.
After class is over, the kids throw their backpacks into the backpack bin before heading into the gym for lunch. All the backpacks are together and easy to carry to the van at the end of the day.
I’m not sure why it took me 3 1/2 years of CC to come up with the backpack bin, but I love it. Prior to having the bin at CC, my kids would leave their backpacks around the gym, and I would end up having to collect them (and the spilled contents). Now, we just grab the full backpack bin after Essentials.
My children even throw their lunchboxes into the backpack bin after dumping their trash. It is so much easier for me to keep track of everything when the four kids know where to put it.
(Note: My Essentials child has separate backpacks for Foundations and Essentials. His Essentials bag is kept in his desk in the school room since we use it throughout the week.)
By the way, we also now have a Bible/AWANA bin for Sundays. Some day, I’ll figure out this organizational thing.
Do you have any organizational tips for large families? How do you keep track of everyone’s stuff when you go somewhere like CC or AWANA?
