As we sat in our first day’s Essentials class, the students went around the room sharing an adjective that started with the same letter as their name and their favorite kind of cupcake. Elijah thought about an adjective for a while and decided on “exciting”.
Students started sharing with the rest of the class. There were a few chocolate cupcakes, and even some with interesting frosting or other toppings. Then, it was Elijah’s turn. I thought he would say a yellow cupcake since he isn’t a fan of chocolate.
But, no. I just wasn’t thinking the way he does. He shared that he couldn’t eat his cupcake because it would be electronic with legs and be a spy gadget.
Can I tell you? At first, I was embarrassed for him. To my shame, I thought, “Why couldn’t he just give an normal answer?” It took me a few minutes, but then I realized that I don’t want him to just think like everyone else. His mind is a marvel, and I want to encourage him to be just the way God made him.
When we got home, I started to relay this story to Seth by telling him that our son thinks outside of the box. Seth thought for a minute trying to imagine what an “outside of the box” answer might be, and he was still blown away by Elijah’s answer.
My son just doesn’t think about things the way others do. I asked him more about his cupcake, and he went on to tell Seth and me about how it would have a cherry on top that would pop up with a secret spy camera. He said he had thought of lots of cool ideas for it (in the very few minutes of sitting in class) but didn’t want too much class time sharing the details.
My sweet boy has talked for years about being an inventor when he grows up. If that’s how his brain works when just asked about a favorite cupcake, I just can’t wait to see what he invents.
