One of the many amazing designs in our body is our heart. God designed it so that it can increase or decrease the rate at which it pumps blood based on what our body needs.
Here is a simple demonstration to experience God’s design:
I had the kids lay on the couch with the lights out and rest. After a few minutes they checked their pulse using the treadmill. You can also check it by hand or have the kids take their own pulses. This can be used as an opportunity for the kids to practice multiplication (take your pulse for 10 seconds and multiply by 6, or 15 seconds and multiply by 4).
Gideon’s resting pulse was 78. Then I startled him by standing behind him and yelling. His pulse shot up to 114.
Isaiah’s resting pulse was 107. After sneaking up on him and putting an ice cube on his belly, his pulse was 121.
Ruth’s resting pulse was 79. I held up 4 quarters and told her she could earn them. Her pulse went to 104. Then I told her to act excited, and it went up to 131.
Elijah showed up later, and his pulse was 84. Then I had him do 10 box jumps as fast as he could, and his pulse rose to 150.
After the activity, we discussed how our blood carries oxygen to our muscles. When we exercise our muscles need more oxygen, so our heart pumps faster. This was demonstrated by Elijah’s workout.
Our bodies will also send that extra oxygen when there is reason to believe that the muscles might need to spring into action. This was the case for Gideon and Isaiah getting startled and for Ruth anticipation.
After our conversation we watched the part of AIG’s Body of Evidence DVD series that is about the heart. This video series is presented in a clear, but not flashy way. Dr. Menton explains how our body works to 2 teenagers using models, props, and animated clips. While the presentation is not super exciting, the information is. Did you know that when we are in the womb, there is a small artery that connects the major artery and vein that go to and from the lungs? This small artery forms a bypass so that the lungs can develop. When a baby takes its first breath, the small artery snaps closed and is never used again. Wow- we truly are fearfully and wonderfully made!
A little more about the Body of Evidence:
- 16 sessions on 8 DVDs
- Over 9 hours of content
- Sessions include: Cells and Tissue, Skeletal System, Integumentary System, Cardiovascular System, Respiratory System, Digestive System, Urinary Sytem, Hearing Ear, and Seeing Eye.
- Target audience is teens and adults, but my younger kids love watching it too
- Normally $80, but on sale right now for $60
- They can also be purchased as individual DVDs if you don’t want to get the whole set.
- Taught from a Biblical perspective – I don’t know how you could watch these and still think we came to be by chance.
Have fun with this little science experiment and if you have the cash, Body of Evidence is a great resource.
(The DVDs can be purchased on Amazon but only as individual DVDs and not the set.)
