This summer, we enjoyed listening to a number of Jim Weiss’s history audio CDs as we were road-tripping. When we got home, I saw that he was working on a new history CD about George Washington and couldn’t wait for it to be released. It just came out in November, and I am thrilled to review it and give a copy of the CD away as well. George Washington: First in the Hearts of his Countrymen is our favorite Jim Weiss CD so far.
Jim Weiss, from Greathall Productions, is an amazing storyteller, but I never really thought about his process of making one of his original CDs until he shared a few details on facebook this summer. In preparing to make his George Washington CD, he read books, interviewed historians, and visited Mount Vernon. The level of preparation is evident as you listen to the 80 minute recording.
What did I like about George Washington: First in the Hearts of his Countrymen?
Jim Weiss inspires our family to want to study more history every time we listen to him. My children had a love of history before we bought his CDs, but his narrations make us even more interested in history.
This CD covered Washington’s whole life and even included details about how his ancestors came to be in Virginia. It was filled with many quotes from Washington’s speeches and correspondence.
Jim Weiss has a great way of explaining details and yet keeping the listener interested. For instance, instead of saying that a log cabin was only one room, he added dialogue of a man asking where the bedrooms were and another man replying that they were standing in it. After mentioning that someone died young, he inserts a sentence about how this was common because they didn’t have modern medicine like we have today.
The unique voices that Weiss uses during dialogue helps to engage the listener and makes quotes stand out in a fun way.
As my 6 year old says, “He goes deeper into details than you already know.” Even though we have studied a bit about George Washington, watched Liberty’s Kids, and read some books, we didn’t know everything he was going to say.
There weren’t wasted words. The information is really packed in for the entire narration. We paused the CD often in the van to talk about it just because so much of the information led to great discussions. This information-filled story also is enjoyable to listen to many more times because there is so much to learn. My children have listened to George Washington twice already as well as re-listening to our Jim Weiss narrations that we own.
Honestly, we love all of our history CDs that we have from Greathall Productions and Jim Weiss. Our family hasn’t heard any of his fictional stories yet, but we hope to get some soon. I’m sure we will love them as well. Greathall Productions describes themselves as “intelligent entertainment for the thinking family.” We have definitely found the history audio CDs add to our family’s lifestyle of learning and turn even simple road trips into excellent learning opportunities.
Greathall Productions has over 50 recordings available for all different ages. On their site, you can even search the storytelling audio by age. There are recording listed for ages 3 and up. I start looking at the list and can hardly find one I wouldn’t want to own.
We have a 1 CD of George Washington: First in the Hearts of his Countrymen to give away (thanks to the Jim Weiss and Greathall Productions). You must be a U.S. resident to win!
