Every year, I feel like we do something different for our children’s birthdays. A few years ago, we did a family activity to celebrate. We ice-skated, mini-golfed, hiked, and watched a performance at Sight and Sound. One year, we let everyone have a kid birthday party. This year, we couldn’t decide what to do so we let the kids pick between an activity and a party.
Isaiah’s birthday is the first in the year, and he chose to have a family game day. In fact, he went so far as to make a detailed game list for us so we knew what to play when. I love that my sweet boy chose a fun, memory-making time for the family to celebrate his birthday.
The “game day” actually became a 3 day celebration (with a few extras like a basketball game or a little school work thrown in.)
Since he turned 7, his dad decided it was time to learn how to play Heroscape. Heroscape is an out-of-print game so we certainly didn’t pay Amazon’s prices. We even have an extra master set (without dice). We actually collected what we have before having children, but I’m glad we have it for the boys and their daddy to play now. Over the course of the “game day” days, quite a few heroscape games were played.
Isaiah also picked Forbidden Island for his game day. This game only allows for up to 4 players and is a co-operative game.
Another 4-player game picked by Isaiah was Survive Escape From Atlantis. While this plays much like a more modern German-type game, it is actually over 30 years old. We own the 30th edition version. This game can be a bit cut-throat, but we have a fun time playing.
The family managed to play a few rounds of Roborally before ending with a family-favorite of The Settlers of Catan. We usually play with the Seafarers Expansion. (In fact, after owning the game for more than 14 years, we just upgraded to a new edition. We still play with the first edition rules for the most part, but our pieces were getting really old.)
We had such a sweet time celebrating Isaiah’s birthday and spending time together as a family. How does your family like to celebrate birthdays?
